Beginner Sewing Tips and Tools

If you are a beginning sewer you are entering an exciting world.  There are so many things you can do as you learn about beginner sewing.  You can increase your wardrobe when you sew dresses as a beginner sewer, you can sew crafts and fun stuff.  Your children can do fun sewing projects.  They can make doll clothes.  You can sew things for holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  The possibilities are endless as you become a beginning sewer.

My mother started beginning sewing with a sewing class for beginners and started sewing children’s clothes when I was a little girl.  She also learned how to make clothes for herself because my parents could not afford to buy clothes for both my mother and me.  She took some advanced sewing classes, too.  I remember one class she took she learned how to make herself a winter coat.  When my brother was small she made sport jackets for him to wear to church.

My beginner sewing involved doll clothes.  I have no recollection of this but presume it is something my mother told me.  I took home economics in the 7th grade and beginner sewing was a part of the curriculum.  I made a sleeveless top with an a-line skirt in a shade of lavender.  The following summer I took a Singer sewing class.  I made a shirtwaist dress out of a medium pink colored material.  These two colors are absolutely terrible for me since I am an autumn.  I love the rich, earth tones.

As I got older and started sewing clothes for myself my mother and I shared her sewing machine.  When I got out of college and started working the first thing I bought was a car (a used 66 Mustang).  The second thing I bought was a sewing machine.  I bought a Kenmore sewing machine from Sears.  I used it for many years.  Several years ago my husband decided to buy his mother a new sewing machine for Christmas.  He took me along with him to “test drive” the sewing machines.  I sewed on several machines, and then sewed on a Bernina 1008 sewing machine.  I told him it sewed like a dream!!  He bought the sewing machine for his mother.  I was planning to put one on layaway for myself but a week or so before christmas he told me I could buy one of the Bernina 1008 sewing machines for myself and that would be my Christmas present.  I have thoroughly enjoyed sewing with it.

There are some basic sewing things you have to do first before you start beginner sewing.  We will cover these things in another part of this web site.
